I have now had this excellent rose for about five years in Oslo and I can confirm it does very well with no die back. I guess that would make it qualify for at least USDA 5B but likely lower. We have had both extraordinarily mild and cold winters the last five years. It takes a break in July but comes back in August with an amazing shower of flowers and scent. Handsome hybrid-rugosas like this is on the top of my list.

Fyi, Wild Edric is a rugosa. For reference info see Pickering's website here, http://www.pickeringnurseries.com/web_store.cgi?cod=10wle

Thank you, Tessie. David Austin Roses, Ltd. registered the rose with the American Rose Society as a shrub. To date, there has been no correction issued for the registration.

I just checked the ARS website Modern Roses 12 and the rose is still listed as a shrub. Since the lineage is not disclosed beyond seedling x seedling, it would be difficult to confirm that the rose should be classified as a rugosa.

Lyn

David Austin himself says it is a rugosa on his website (well *both* a shrub and a rugosa!):

Maybe the breeder should have the final say and not the ARS. After all, David Austin is in England not America.;)

Actually, if you check the References, Mr. Austin's machine DID have the final say...they registered Wild Edric as a shrub. "'Aushedge', S, dp, 2006, Wild Edric". Code Name, Shrub, deep pink, Wild Edric.

Tessie......

I did add "hybrid rugosa" to the HMF class section of the rose page since you confirmed that Austin is now calling the rose a rugosa. They know the lineage of their roses and can distribute that kind of information.

Just a note: I have left the ARS class designation alone because those fields on the rose page are limited to information provided to the American Rose Society.

Thank you for taking the time to check Austin's sites. Last night when I came in from the garden, I did not have the energy to really research anything. It's wonderful to have members of the rose community help HMF add good information to the rose pages.

Lyn

Thank you Lyn!

One of the things I like so much about Help Me Find is that it actually does help you find the roses you want. I frequently look for roses by class, and I think it is good that HMF often has roses listed with more than one. Because individual roses can fit more than one category simultaneously. That may not be how they are registered in a particular country though (and conventions/terminology could be different, depending on where the rose was bred, so I'm glad HMF reflects the international nature of growing roses). It is more useful to be able to find roses with the additional information than to leave it out.

Thanks again,

Melissa

Melissa.......

Our biggest difficulty in adding additional classes just because one nursery has decided that the rose should be classified differently is determining the validity of the additional classification.

Having you, a member of the rose community, take the time to help us out by doing a bit more research is incredibly valuable and truly helps HMF become a better tool.

So, a big "thank you" back at you.

Smiles,
Lyn
