During the mid-1800's in the United States in which parts of the country and by whom were roses usually grown?

The mid 1800s was about the time of the Civil War. Most agricultural businesses were located near urban centers. One interesting note is that several nurseries were established in California during this time due the the California gold rush and the new wealth that allowed for new estates to be built.
