Stipule
At the base of a leafstalk, the small leafy outgrowths on each side, where the leafstalk attaches to the cane. Stipules can be narrow or wide, fringed or smooth, folded, triangular or thready. Stipules vary widely among different classes of roses and can sometimes lend clues to a rose's heredity.

The top edges of the stipules that stick up like fox ears are referred to as auricles.
