I picked up a plant of Spartan from the Home Depot last year. It was mixed in with all the non-patent, #2 roses in 2 gallon pots. The plant was healthy, covered with buds and only $4.97. I also had wanted one because of it's importance in the development of modern roses. It is one sensational rose. It grows like crazy, is disease resistant, reblooms as fast as any rose I have and has wonderful coral blooms with a great scent. The color looks great in the garden and really "carries" (you notice it from a great distance). You can pay a lot more for newly introduced rose, but you can't beat Spartan for a cluster-flowered rose. Highly recommended.

It should be noted that Spartan has profuse bloom, it is tolerant of clay soil, it is disease and insect resistant, and also heat tolerant. I have had plenty of modern roses do poorly, but this one is a very good rose.

Yes, it should be noted and you just did, thank you !

It would be even MORE helpful if you registered on HMF and told us a little about yourself and your garden. With that information, other site guests could put your comments in the context of how this plant does in an environment similar to yours. HMF registration allows you to remain anonymous and at the same time makes your contributions even more useful.

Now if everyone else would start sharing their experience too we would really have a useful collection of first hand experience to draw upon - hint, hint.

Thanks again!

I am looking for a red or coral coloured floribunda rose bush with strong perfume or fragrance.
The nursery suppliers in the area where I live told me that most red (or coral) floribunda roses are either not scented or have only weak / mild scents.
So, I am rather surprised when I read here that Spartan is a floribunda red-orange / coral coloured rose with strong fragrance.
To those who had / have experience with this rose, please let me have your opinion on the following:
1) How is the perfume / fragrance of Spartan ( mild ? medium ? strong ? )
2) Is Spartan a floribunda rose bush ?
3) How tall does it grow ?
4) While Spartan has orange blends in the colour of its flowers, would you say it has more of the red/pink shade or the orange shade, or equal amount of red/pink and orange shades ?

Thanking you in advance.

HelpSeeker,

You can also try going to the garden listings for people growing this rose and post individual queries to them.

Spartan doesn't have much in the way of fragrance, though it's been very hot here so it may have some.
Spartan is indeed a floribunda, blooms and grows in classic floribunda style.
Mine is small, perhaps two feet. I live in a winter zone, and it has been blazing hot this year... both will keep bushes smallish. I'd imagine it would be 4 or so feet in a more temperate zone.
Spartan has very little pink, even when it fades. Solidly a coral/orange blend.

Even though it's been very hot, my bush has been in near constant bloom all summer. A gold star by any standard.

HelpSeeker,
Are you looking for a blend or red or coral roses? If you are looking for a nicely scented red rose, I just purchased an Ingrid Bergman. The blooms are as large as my hand, it has deep red petals that resemble velvet, and it has a pleasant aroma.
For just one that is coral, I like Montezuma. That one is a little show-stopper. Not particularly fragrant but has a nice little scent to it.

Basically, I am looking for floribunda roses with very strong and fragrant / perfumed scent (that is not too tall, approx 110 - 130 cm bush).
I understand that "strong and fragrant / perfumed scent" is rather relative .....
In my collection are the following:
White = Margaret Meril
Yellow = Fresia
Mauve/Blue = Love Potion
Orange = Honey Bouquet
Pink = Radox Bouquet
Salmon = Dearest (some people said it has only moderate fragrance, but I think Dearest is rather fragrant)
Perfume Perfection (I cannot decide whether it is pink or light mauve).

The reason I am looking for floribunda roses in red, coral, red-orange and/or pink shades is because I was told floribundas in those colours / shades are seldom strongly scented.
So, I was very surprised when Radox Bouquet and Dearest seem fragrant and rather strongly scented to me.
Now that I have found my pink fragrant floribundas, the remaining colour/shade left to find is the red/coral floribunda rose.
The red floribunda that seem to have a very slight scent to me is Lilli Marlene, but I would like something more strongly perfumed than that.

Geranium Red is INTENSELY fragrant. It's a "sharp" fragrance rather than "strong". There is an element of Geranium (Pelargonium leaf) scent to it. In my opinion, it's appropriately as sharp as the color is intense.

I recently borrowed a Rose encyclopedia from the library and looked through the list .....
I found a few Red strongly fragrant floribunda roses that I would be interested .....
but alas, not much info is available about those roses, and they may not be available in Australia.

The strongly scented red floridunda roses that I have short listed are:
Duftbella
Dance of Joy
Dale Farm
Red Wonder
Sparkling Scarlet
Sundra
Walko

So, if anyone have more info on these, please post it in the relevant HMF Rose site.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your recommendations, Lyn & Rupert.

I took a look at Geranim Red photos & info, and it looks like Geranium Red has the 'old English rose' flower form.
Geranium Red certainly has the correct colour, (and possibly the fragrance) that I wanted.
However, I prefer the more highly pointed 'Tea' flower forms in floribunda, with a fragrance.

I'll keep looking in the meanwhile.
:)

My daughter and nephew just graduated from San Jose State and I understand that they are replanting these bushes to commemorate the 150 th year os the school. Where can I purchase some? Barbara

Click the BUY FROM tab on the upper right hand portion of the page and scroll down to see a list of nurseries which have indicated that they carry this rose in their inventory.

I attend San Jose State. It's a very nice mass planting. If you see a gardener there, why not ask if you can take cuttings during the winter?
