Ainsi nommé parce que ce peintre célèbre l'a fait entrer souvent dans ses compositions. C'est le Bifera coronata du Nouveau Duhamel, la Damascena celsiana de Redouté. Propagée par Cels, cette variété était aussi appelée l'Abondante, la Coquette, la Rose de Cels.

Rosa damascena Mil, (Damask rose). This species, one of the most common in gardens, is a native of the Levant, and was introduced to Britain as early as 1573. It is powerfully and agreeably fragrant, and is the kind most used for making the attar, or essential oil of roses. The varieties are numerous and exceedingly beautiful. Some of the finest are Grand Cels, belle Auguste, Swiss, Quatre seasons, Bonaparte, Rose du Roi, Garnet striped, and York and Lancaster.
