Alba (OGR), white, (R. alba maxima; 'Maxima'; 'Great Double White'; 'The Jacobite Rose'); Prior to 1867. Flowers similar to 'Maiden's Blush', but center creamy; height 6-8 ft. This has sported to Alba Semi-Plena.

Maxima Alba. Parentage: Possibly R. canina x R. gallica, or R. alba semiplena sport. (aka 'Jacobite Rose', 'Great White Rose'. 'Great Double White', 'White Rose of York', 'Cheshire Rose'). Origin unknown, but 15th century or earlier. Description and cultivation... flower are creamy white and fragrant doubles with muddled centres...

R. x alba 'Maxima' gained the name 'The Jacobite Rose' from the legend that it had been placed in the bonnet of Bonnie Prince Charlie by Flora Macdonald and was thus cherished by his followers.
