was on line today looking for another Climbing Fourth of July. Purchased at a Costco of all places 3 years ago, never "rescued" a rose from near death before but the price was right......It was one of those JP retail plant the box deals, budded and had a bloom that got my wife excited......yes, she actually was excited by the color. Planted on south wall of Garden shed expecting it to die and we have been impressed, vigor, growth and bloom has been exceptional. it is now over 8' and spreading to cover the wall. I don't deal with much if any Blackspot or mildew here in the high desert, had alot of rain in July and August (above the norm) and still no disease.

I was looking for it on the JP site and couldn't find it, noticed it was a Week's introduction in '99. I guess I will have to find another in a garden Center unless some on knows where it can be ordered. Grow about 20+ climbers-ramblers and have a spot for another 4th of july.

Just found "own root" source on this great site, I don't buy any "budded versions" anymore.

In the Silicon VAlley this climber grows fast and strong! And the flowers are bright and crazy!

However . . . it looks rather 'messy'  with its many dried, dead blooms and crumpled petals!

SHADOW DANCER is a much better looking climber, in my estimation!! The stamens stay

covered and the petals look nice and full for quite a long time.

FOJ is blackspot prone in my garden as well-it also developed a slight case of powdery mildew, but not as severe as some of the others. It has been a very vigorous grower after a month-long sleeping spell (it was planted in midsummer after surviving a near death experience at our local Wal-Mart), and has now produced a 5 foot basal with numerous offshoots that already have blooms-looks like a winning climber in my garden.--A 2007 update--FOJ is definitely blackspot prone in my area and must be sprayed. During my recent garden renovation, when other BS magnets were removed, this one survived the cut because she is so darn vigorous and is just an absolute bloom machine!

My Fourth of July has grown large with many branches. What is the best way to Spring prune this rose?

Depending on how old your plant may be, you should cut out one of the oldest canes ( a cane which is three to four years old) to encourage your plant to grow new canes from the base. The remaining canes should have the side shoots cut back to leave two or three buds from the main cane, then they should be tied to whatever you are growing it on.
