Mr. H. V. Machin. The Council announce with great regret the death in August last of one of the Society's Vice-Presidents, Mr. H. V. Machin. Although not so well known to present-day Rosarians, a few years ago he was a most successful Amateur exhibitor at the Society's Provincial Shows. His loss will be keenly felt, the more so as he had endeared himself to so many friends.

"Hawlmark" Novelties, 1914.
H. V. Machin (Hybrid Tea, Exhibition). -- A dazzlingly, imperious, globular Rose of gigantic size. We consider it a chef d’œuvre, and one of the best exhibition Roses it has yet been our good fortune to produce, or has ever been disseminated, indeed, we look upon it as the embodiment of a perfect bloom, combining size, form and colour, the attributes demanded or required in a model exhibition flower, consequently we have named it after one of Britain's most honoured and famed Rosarians – "Henry Vesey Machin". Its intensely black grained, scarlet crimson blooms are carried on rigid flower stalks, on sturdy, erect growth, embellished with ideal, glaucous, H.P.-like beech-green foliage. It is virtually an H.P.- H.T., by this we wish to convey it has the grandeur of the rarer coloured H.P.'s, with exceptional H.T. qualifications. Faintly tea-perfumed. A truly magnificent Rose. Awarded Gold Medal, N.R.S., and several Medals for best bloom. Standards, 10/6; Dwarfs, 7/6 each.
Book  (1913)  Page(s) 155.
