This is a wonderfully fragrant rose. It blooms in great flushes of more than a dozen at a time, and the fragrance from this 4-foot shrub can be smelled from an upstairs window.

The color seems temperature sensitive--intense pinkish-purple when the weather is cool, and more lavender during the warmer weather.

It's gotten a little blackspot at the end of the season, but nothing significant and I don't spray.

J&P states this is a 5 foot rose, I'd like to know if the height is accurate or does it tend to grow taller in warmer climates like California

Dove,

Many roses grow taller and larger in Southern California because of the longer daylight hours and the intensity of the light as compared to more northern latitudes.  Although roses do like heat, that is not necessarily the trigger to make them grow larger in SOCAL.

Dove, this rose looks as if five feet is easily what you may expect, with some spikes taller.

I've been keeping mine at close to seven feet. This is after taking it down to two feet back in August due to hurricane fears. Very vigorous rose!

It grows very wide in zone 8b Oregon. It is much like Ingrid Bergman where mature plants at the end of the summer end up becoming wider, instead of taller, unlike many hybrid teas tend to do. I wouldnt call it a very linear plant like, say, Touch of Class.

Michael,
That is not such good news... wide is really not what I was hoping for.
I will keep that in mind next year when I prune it.
Thanks for the info.

There is also a climbing version of Melodie Parfumée, which goes up to 10 ft easily, while the shrub is around 5 ft. It depends which you have in the garden.

Hi Jeb,
I have the shrub and not the climbing version.
Last year when I bought it, for some reason I thought it was a floribunda. Realizing it's a grandiflora explains a lot about it's form.

Cheers

I think they should update the hardiness of this rose I live in 5b central massachusetts and this rose has been planted in my garden since 2000. Some winters I have mounded it some winters I have not and it still shoots up every year to about 5 feet. It has serious bouts of black spot but manages to keep coming back year after year. It doe significantly better when mounded and is among my favorite smelling rose in my garden
