[From the article "Italian Rose Breeders" by Stelvio Coggiatti:]
The first Italian nurseryman to catalogue a variety created in his homeland, so far as I can discover, is Bonfiglioli of Bologna. It was the Hybrid Perpetual 'Principessa di Napoli'. The Bonfiglioli firm maintained even in the following years the honourable privilege of presenting various Italian varieties in the catalogues. In this initiative they were supported by the collaboration of their co-citizen Massimilano Lodi who was also the raiser of many of the roses placed on the market by Bonfiglioli, such as the outstanding 'Variegata di Bologna' obtained in 1909.

Jack Harkness. Roses For A Million Years.
One of the last Bourbons to be raised as Variegata di Bologna, in 1909. This is a very fragrant double flower, white striped purple - quite striking. Unfortunately it is one of the worst for black spot in England. According to Norman Young, the chances are that it is a sport from a purple variety called 'Victor Emmanuel', which was popular in Italy. He bases that guess on the fact that 'Variegata di Bologna' occasionally produces an all-purple flower, which no-one in England can identify.

A few so-called Bourbons have appeared in the present century, but their authenticity is generally dubious. Variegata di Bologna occurred in 1909 and is characterised by white blooms irregularly striped with purple. Its parentage has not been revealed, but it occasionally reverts to an all purple flower which has not been identified, but a Bourbon in this colour named 'Victor Emmanuel' was long popular in Italy.
