'Fabvier', France 1832. ‘Mme. Fabvier’ or ‘Général Fabvier’. A short growing variety approaching the form of a Polyantha Rose, but with typical China Rose stems, prickles, leaves, and lack of scent. The small flowers are borne singly or a few together, and have rather more than a single row of brilliant scarlet-crimson petals, often showing a white streak. It is a gay little plant, always in flower, but it is difficult to fit into the garden. It would be admirable in small formal Victorian beds, or can be given a place in front of modern roses. Leaves richly tinted when young, turning to dark leaden green. Almost scentless. 18 inches.

Fabvier Laffay. Flower semi-double, 2 1/2 in., deep crimson, fading to paler at base of petals. Stamens numerous; styles red, short. Very faint scent. Pedicel with very few short thorns; hip smooth. Calyx a little longer, sharp pointed, not winged. Leaves dark, glossy, in fives, lighter below, thorny. Stipule regularly edged with long glands. Wood smooth. Named after General Fabvier, who fought under Napoleon, and later for Greek independence. Finally he entered Parliament, where he fought the powers of the day against excessive taxation. An admirable Rose and still worth a place.
