By the way, in The Ultimate Guide to Roses (Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix, Macmillan, 2004, p. 138) the parentage of Antique 89 is listed as Grand Hotel x Symphonie.

Thank you for your post. It prompted me to check a couple of modern sources of roses and I found two references that show that Grand Hotel X Symphonie is the pollen parent. I have put up the full parentage and both references.

Smiles,
Lyn

This is the third year I've had Antique 89, and it is finally getting going. It was a bit slow off the mark, but as is often the case with the best roses, it takes a few years for them to develop their roots. In any case, this year it is producing lots of new, very strong canes and huge clusters of flowers. This is a beautiful rose from any distance -- from far away it's bright and cheery, from close up it's a fascinating confection of ivory petals lavishly brushed with brilliant cherry red. The flower form is in the old rose vein, though the colors are clearly modern. No old rose has these brilliant contrasting hues. They make excellent cut flowers. Also, the foliage is disease-free, very glossy (looks like it's been shellacked), but beware the stems are viciously armed with prickles. Highly recommended.
