Origin:
Bred by Pierre-Hubert Portemer père (France, 1849).
Introduced in Australia by John J. Rule, Victoria Nursery in 1858 as 'Hermann Kegel'.
Class:
Moss.  
Bloom:
Carmine-red, violet shading, crimson streaks, stripes, flecks.  Sometimes streaked crimson or lilac.  Average diameter 2.25".  Medium, full (26-40 petals), borne mostly solitary bloom form.  Occasional repeat later in the season.  Leafy sepals, long sepals buds.  
Habit:
Armed with thorns / prickles.  5 to 7 leaflets.  
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).
