Princess Caroline Amelia Elizabeth of Brunswick-Wolfebuttel. Born 17 May 1768. Died 7 August 1821. The Prince of Wales, the future George IV, married Caroline of Brunswick in 1795. He left her the following year immediately after the birth of their only child, Princess Charlotte. In 1812, Caroline left for the Continent, but returned, against her husband's wishes, on the accession of George as King. In 1820, he charged her with adultery and started divorce proceedings in the House of Lords. The trial was abandoned after three months. Caroline died on 7 August 1821. She wanted to be remembered in her epitaph as Caroline of Brunswick, The Wronged Queen, but the plaque was refused her tomb. 'Caroline d'Angleterre' was released the year after her death.
