In 1826, M. Lemoyne, one of the founders of la Société Nantaise d'Horticulture, sowed seeds he had collected from Thé-bengale ordinaire, which was near, among others, R. Bracteata, within a distance of about four feet. From these seedlings came the subject rose [Marie Leonidas] that bloomed for the first time in 1829.

"Le Rosier Bractéolé" by Viviand-Morel:
[Trans.: The horticultural varieties of Rosa bracteata are two, namely: varieties alba odorata and Maria Leonida. Alba odorata is indicated in the catalogues like having been put at the trade by Levet, in 1874. Maria Leonida is announced to be a hybrid of Rosa moschta. It was not known to de Pronville, in 1823. Le Bon Jardinier of 1834 mentions it, but does not indicate its raiser. Library research between these two dates should find the history of this rose; I must acknowledge that all the books that I consulted do not contain anything which can inform us on it. Whatever it is, the Rose Maria Leonida passes for a hybrid of Rosa bracteata and Rosa moschata - I suppose of a kind with double flowers.

Maria Leonida has delightful Tea-like buds, but only about half their size. It resembles Rubens in colour. The calyx is very quaint, reaching, finger-like, almost to the top of the petals, and covered with tiny reddish hairs. The expanded flowers are double, but not extra double. When fully developed, they display a small bunch of crimson anthers, and there are a few petals overlapping the centre, which look exactly as if a small button has been inserted. The habit is not so trailing as Alba simplex, and the foliage is larger. The growths, usually from 2½ feet to 3½ feet in length, are crowned with a bunch of flowers at top. Sometimes these growths produce from twelve to fifteen laterals, each bearing one crown blossom. The variety seems to be closely related to the Clynophylla Roses (R. lucida). As conservatory Roses these Macartneys would be very interesting, for they are practically evergreen when removed from the ravages of frost.

Maria Leonida was planted as an edging to one of the beds, and under the treatment here subjected to has a very pretty effect. The shoots are pegged down in spring and clipped in June, this keeps the plant dwarf, and it produces a mass of its beautiful white flowers in the autumn months. Being evergreen, and possessed of fine, large, glossy foliage, it must become a great favourite if cultivated in this manner. It is doubtless well known that under ordinary circumstances the flowers do not expand freely, but the pegging down and clipping which it undergoes entirely cures it of this bad habit.
