Good morning Carlene,

All roses should have at least 6 hours of sun light to bloom at there best. Any less than that, and you will sacrifice blooms.

Regards,
Alan

Actually I have plenty of roses that bloom a lot with only 3-4 hours of sun a day. Because I live in the Houston area with very strong sun, 3-4 hours here equals probably 6+ hours of sun in overcast San Francisco or Seattle.

Day Breaker rose seems to be a very good grower and bloomer. I'm still in my first year with it, as I bought it last summer, and I still have it in a pot. Even with less than ideal soil in the pot, it put out beautiful healthy foliage this spring, and a nice flush of flowers. The fragrance is wonderful. It's interesting how the flowers are distinctly pink and yellow close up, but from a distance they look like a solid soft apricot. I love having this rose right outside my bedroom window, so I can look out and see its cheerful colors first thing when I get up.

Did you try searching for gardens growing this rose - that might be a good start.

I am in zone 9a - hotter than zone 8. It does very well, and repeats a lot in our hot and humid climate. Very healthy, no disease and no insects. Almost continuous bloom in our very hot area. They make very pretty cut flowers that last a long time in the vase. They have a strong rose scent. It is a very dependable rose. I have three of them. One of them is about 5 ft. tall and looks great. I would recommend this rose to anyone.

I am not sure which part of zone 8 you are in. I am in north Texas and my day Breaker did quite well last summer in a container. It did not bloom in the very hottest weather but it was only a baby then. This is its second year and the spring bloom is so heavy I am perfectly amazed. I don't know if it will bloom in very hot weather--I have to see. But, it is satisfactory indeed and I recommend it.

I have found this rose to produce flowers at all times of the year. During the hottest part of the summer the blooms are more yellow and tend to have less petals, but come Fall of the year and it regains it's missing flower petals. And, the color tends more toward the pink/peach color as the average daytime temp. cools down again like early spring. Either way, this is still a gorgeous rose no matter the time of year. Even during hottest summer the foliage still stays a strong, shiny, and healthy dark green which makes it a beautiful bush all by itself, though it is never completely without flowers. It blooms continuously the entire growing season. It is always one of the first to start blooming in the spring and the last to stop blooming in the fall. I am enamored with this rose to the hilt!! They just don't get any better than DayBreaker and you won't regret getting one or two for your garden.

R97076's post says this rose is healthy, but R102559's post seems to indicate it's prone to mildew. Since I don't spray routinely, I'm looking for very disease resistant roses. Can anyone tell me if this rose is normally disease resistant without routine spraying in zone 9?

I have found this rose to be quite disease resistant. I have rarely seen any sign of any fungal disease of any kind on it. I do spray but even when I get behind it never gets disease like other roses will. It also seems to be bug resistant as well since I never have thrip or beetle problems with it either. This is such a great rose I have planted six of them and am going to add more again next Spring. In 2009 the blackspot and mildew seemed to run rampant among most all rosebeds in this area. Much more so than ever in years past. I did see a small amount on the lower foliage of some of my 5 Day Breaker bushes but it was easily contained with my normal spray routine even when other roses continued to struggle with the disease. This Fall mildew was much heavier on my roses but DB continued to stay clean of it completely.
This rose produces prodigious amounts of pollen for hybridyzing and sets hips acceptably though not as proficiently as some of the best hip setters. I have seen many photos of DB seedlings and they seem to carry on the beautiful foliage and bloom form and color that DB possesses. I think we will see more and more seedlings here on HMF as hybridyzers learn how to use it in their breeding programs. I myself am planning on using it very heavily in floribunda breeding starting next year.
