Margaret Furness:  So Many Pink-and-Silvers - a brief overview of found Hybrid Perpetuals at Renmark.
One of the tangents we went along at Ruston’s, in the nominal HRIA Tea-Noisette- China Collection, was to collect found Hybrid Perpetuals. We ran out of time to study them well, but many of them were pink or mauve-pink with a silvery reverse to the petals, sometimes with a button eye. Many of those fell into one of two groups.
The first have globular, initially cupped flowers: at one stage I called them “Anna-La Reine”, since I couldn’t tell the difference between La Reine (1842) and its offspring Anna de Diesbach (1857). Now I just call them La Reine Family. David Ruston OAM said that “Old Anlaby” had the best repeat of that group in the HRIA collection.

Rosa ‘De la Reine’
Hybrid Perpetual.  ‘La Reine’ has very large and globular, fragrant, glossy rose-pink flowers, tinged with lilac, and is a strong grower.  [Paul (1848, 1863, 1888), Rivers (1854, 1863), Henry Curtis p.1 vol.1/1850, Gard Chron. 1847, Amat].

Horticultural & Botanical History
Bred by Laffay in 1842.  According to Paul, this rose, ‘one of M. Laffay’s original Hybrid Perpetuals, is not yet surpassed in any way’.  Rivers agreed, with some reservations, considering it, in dry seasons the most beautiful and fragrant rose.  It makes a good pot rose.  Louis van Houtte included ‘de la Reine’ in an Énumération des plus belles variétiés et….des autres!, all Hybrid Perpetuals, in the Flore des Serres.  [FS pgs.91-102 vol.15/1864].  In the first great National Rose show held in July 1858, ‘La Reine’ was listed amongst the roses appearing in multiple (10) winning collections.  [Gard. Chron. 1858].
The bloom of 'La Reine' photographed at Camden Park on a damp morning is a recent reintroduction to the gardens.

History at Camden Park
Included in a handwritten list of roses dated 1861, probably intended for a new edition of the catalogue that was never printed.  [MP A2943].  This rose was also included in the bill of lading for roses sent from Veitch’s Nursery, Chelsea on Dec, 31st, 1859 on board the ‘Hollinside’ but found dead on arrival.

Patricia Routley:  The Phantom Rose "La Reine Victoria".
Despite  what many of the books  say, the label "La Reine Victoria" belongs to no rose.
Depending on which  rose you are referring to, you either have to:
drop   the la to come up  with the Bourbon 'Reine Victoria',  or
drop   the 'Victoria' to come up with the Hybrid Perpetual    La Reine'

You  may   be able to distinguish  between  the  two by these  descriptions,  from  Brent
C. Dickerson's The  Old Rose Advisor.

`La Reine' (Hybrid Perpetual) Laffay, 1844.
...This magnificent rose, held on an iron-strong stem, is a whitish-pink on the
exterior and a beautiful light lilac-pink towards the centre, shaded delicately, lightly,
a quality intensified by the satiny nature of the petals.... The branches are upright,
armed  with some remote, feeble prickles insecurely held on the cane. The bark
is a glaucous green like the leaves, very smooth, and laden with the same sort of
powdery  substance as raisins and plums have.... Martin-Victor Paquet et al, Choix
     des Plus Belles Roses, 1845 — 1854.

La Reine HP. Good reliable rebloom. Outstanding fragrance. Habit: [diagram]1.  Laffay, 1842  [provenance: Robinson found]  Aptly named for the Queen.  Not only an important HP parent, but a longtime favourite among gardeners throughout the United States.  Flowers of rich, true pink are unrivaled when at the best.
