Origin:

Bred by M.S. Viraraghavan (India, 1979).
Introduced in India by KSG Sons/KSG's Roses in 1979 as 'Kanyakumari'.

Class:

Climber, Large-Flowered Climber.

Bloom:

Orange-pink. None / no fragrance. Average diameter 4". Very large, double (17-25 petals), borne mostly solitary bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Habit:

Tall, climbing, upright.

Height: up to 12' (up to 365cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default). Can be used for garden or pillar. Remove spent blooms to encourage re-bloom. Prune lightly until this rose gets established (about two years), then prune it back by about a third.. Remove unproductive wood every third year or so.

Breeder's notes:

Surprisingly, we never thought to have an English name for this coral shaded salmon colored climber, which though registered only in 2006, was bred in the 1970’s and released in India in 1979.
‘Kanyakumari’ means ‘young girl’ and the seedling when young, grew lithe and slender , with an air of innocence and questing , as you would expect in a young person.
Kanyakumari is also the name of the town which is at the southernmost tip of peninsular India, and considered a sacred place because three great oceans meet and mingle their waters – the Indian Ocean in the south, the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west. At the exact tip- land’s end -- is a hoary old temple, and the goddess ensconced in the sanctum is ‘Kanyakumari’.

Our ‘Kanyakumari’ can grow into a sturdy climber and every shoot produced ends in a cluster of three flowers, which are well shaped and last well.
