Fifty years ago in a suburb of Sydney, Maman Cochet, then quite a new Rose, sported a vigorous climbing shoot, and the right to propagate was purchased by three New South Wales nursery-men. Unfortunately for them, the "sport" stubbornly refused to perpetuate its climbing form, and this particular instance resulted in failure. Some years afterwards, White Maman Cochet sported a climbing form in a public garden, and buds were given to several nurserymen for propagation. One absentminded individual put the packet in his pocket, forgot all about it, and later was chagrined to find the buds dead. His competitors listed the new form and he was left lamenting. Still later on a few cuttings of pink Maman Cochet were put out in the garden of the Walker Convalescent Hospital, Parramatta River, N.S.W, and one promptly developed climbing form which reproduced the mutation without any difficulty, and Climbing Maman Cochet then became an established fact in the Rose lists.
