Average diameter 4".  Double (17-25 petals), flat, flat to cupped bloom form.  Large buds.
Habit:
Bushy.  Semi-glossy foliage.

USDA zone 3a through 9b.  Hardy.
Breeder's notes:
"Ross Rambler 62 # 3 - Does not look like a Ross seedling. Therese Bugnet type bush, brighter colored wood, leaves broader, more rugose, slightly glossy. Large red buds. Fully double, deep rose flowers, 4", much same color as S.D. Tetonkaha, deep, good centre. But has loose, sloppy form of rugosa hybrids. Opens today, gone tomorrow. If it makes a good bush and is floriferous it might be worth further trial." Walter Schowalter's comments courtesy of Walter's daughter, Margit Schowalter.
Patents:
Patent status unknown (to HelpMeFind).
Notes:
Percy Wright gave Walter Schowalter 46 open pollinated seedlings from 'the 'Ross Rambler' rose to grow out. This is a selection from these. It is known as Ross Rambler #3 (RR3).

"'Walter Schowalter' is similar in appearance to 'Therese Bugnet', but the foliage is more attractive and the larger, deeper pink flowers are more beautiful. However, unlike 'Therese Bugnet' this cultivar only blooms once. This cultivar appears to be a Rosa rugosa hybrid with Rosa blanda in its pedigree." [comment from Paul Olsen]

Paul Olsen received permission from WS to name this one (see correspondence of PO to Margit Schowalter) [Pittao] Ross Rambler 3 appears as 'Walter Schowalter' in the Devonian Botanic Garden.

However, since the rose is not registered as 'Walter Schowalter', the Ross Rambler 3 name should be primary. [Pittao]
