Dark red. Strong, musk fragrance. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Habit:

Height: 2' to 3' (60 to 90cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 6b and warmer. Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant, susceptible to Mildew. Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.

Notes:

A correspondent writes: the fragrance of this rose is stronge musk, blooms are so dark on the underside that they appear to be black, spraying is a must for mildew.

Someone else writes: 'Nearly Black' is a slow-growing bush. Petals of the flower are thick and meaty with a velvety texture.

Melanie from Virginia (USDA Zone 7) writes: This rose is for all intense and purposes blackspot free. Mine is a very strong grower. The blooms are very long-lived. The bush tends to grow taller than wider. Mine reaches 7+ feet. I have never seen mildew on it; however, our area is not mildew prone. BTW, I got mine several years ago from [the now defunct] Michigan Bulb Company.
