'Red Radiance' rose References

My first experience with the climbing sports of the bush Hybrid Tea roses began six years ago. In a planting of fifty dwarf Hybrid Teas on a clay foundation, one bush of Red Radiance... out grew all of its companions, but as I had never seen a climbing sport, it was not until I had it in its second year that I fully realized its superiority. With no better treatment, and only the scanty natural rainfall available, it produced one hundred and twenty-five perfect buds or open flowers at its first spring blooming compared to the ten to twelve buds furnished by its companions.

Fertilizer and Color
Dr. W. H. Brundige, TN
Four years ago I had a bed of forty-eight Red Radiances. From these I selected two bushes and used a commercial fertilizer—blood, bone, and potash in a ratio of 5-8-7. I used one pint to each bush on May 1, and such roses as they produced—dark red, with petals like velvet. The two bushes were entirely different from the others and bore the most beautiful flowers I ever saw.
I learned of 5-8-7 fertilizer in August, 1930, from the Agricultural Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J. I carried soil up there and had it analyzed, and they suggested using 6 to 8 per cent ammonia, 6 to 8 per cent phosphoric acid, and 5 to 7 per cent potash, and I have used it ever since. It certainly brings out the color of the rose. I use 5-8-7 fertilizer early in May and again the middle of July.

Red Radiance. HT. (Gude Bros., 1916.) Sport of Radiance. Similar in habit and growth but a clear, even shade of red and of equal merit with its parent as a garden rose. (Another less satisfactory sport - as to colour - was sent out by Pierson, but later withdrawn.) Illus. in colour, p. 213.

Red Radiance  I am afraid this choice shows that I lack "an appreciative and cultivated taste ", and would prevent me from graduating from Mr G. A. Stevens'  "Short Course in Rose Culture" (1928 Annual). Nevertheless, I remain obturate. I fully agree with him that many red roses have better blossoms, but no other can take the place of this rose in the garden. The sturdiness of its growth, the splendid, heavy, green foliage, and it's freedom of bloom must give it first place, and the blossoms themselves are handsome. The colour of pink Radiance has always seemed comparatively uninteresting to me, but this rose is a good red, and while I generally prefer a high-pointed centre, these large, tulip-like blossoms, in their setting of dark green, command unfailing admiration.

Everblooming Roses
The so-called Everblooming Roses include the Hybrid Tea and Pernetiana groups. They do not bloom all the time, but if kept healthy and growing steadily, one crop of flowers succeeds another at brief intervals.
Red Radiance. Hybrid Tea. (Gude Bros., 1916.) Big, globular flowers of deep rose-red on strong, individual canes which are freely produced all summer until frost. Foliage excellent.
Ours is the darker of the two varieties called Red Radiance, and we think it is the better; its color is more nearly light crimson than red. One of the most popular Roses in America for its free-blooming qualities and excellent habit.

....strange to say, Edward Mawley, Hadley, Sensation, General MacArthur, National Emblem,  Chateau des Clos Vougeot,  American Beauty and many others do only passably well, at least by comparison with Red Radiance.

General List (5) Red Radiance (HT. Gude 1916). F. 4. .....This variety is at its best as regards colour in the winter months in Sydney zone and is worth growing for this valuable quality alone, while its sweet perfume is similar to the parent variety.
