Could this rose be planted in a large 1/2 wine barrel and thrive?

Yes this rose will be okay in your container. Keep a watch out for disease as this rose is very prone to black spot.

Austrian Copper's grow "wild" in our area (Western Colorado; 4500-5000 ft. elev.), and are a popular large landscape shrub. They are VERY fragrant, contrary to their dscription on the main page. The fragrance is citrus-y, with rose hints--a delightful blend.
