cultivar 'Persiana'. Persian Double Yellow. Flowers very double, freely borne. According to William Paul it was introduced by Sir Henry Willock in 1837....scarce for many years, since the Kentish rose-grower Hooker of Lamberhurst had a small stock in 1843 for which he was asking ...an enormous price for a rose in those days. It is named Rosa lutea persiana by Lemaire...'Persiana' is not to be confused with the typical double form of R. hemisphaerica, which....was regarded as the double form of R. foetida, nor with the R. lutea flore pleno of Sweet, which is ...'William's Double Yellow'...

Rosa foetida Persiana Shrub rose
This old shrub rose which comes from western Asia has full, brilliant canary-yellow flowers. R. foetida has provided very important material for hybridisation, in that it indirectly brought its "yellow blood" to our most beautiful yellow roses, such as Peace, Spek's Yellow, President Herbert Hoover and others. Persian Yellow, which grows to a good 3 ft, thrives best in light soil in a sheltered sunny position.

Persian Yellow is the name under which we received this plant, but about the only points of similarity between it and Persian Yellow is its flower which is deep yellow, semi-double to double , and pleasingly fragrant. We have tentatively identified it as Sonnenlicht. Under either name a superb yellow shrub rose. 5-6' x 5-6'.

Persian Yellow was known in England before 1607. [ed. note: is this a confusion of Rosa lutea multiplex, for example mentioned in The Gardeners Dictionary, by Phillip Miller (1735) or Hortus Kewensis (1789) which mentions its introduction in 1629. ]
