This rose was recommended to me back in the mid 1970's. They said then I might have trouble finding it, but I was sucessful and loved it. BUT...I guess I pruned it too severly- some say it resents hard pruning. I have not replaced it, as it seemed difficult to find. However when I see it is still taking high honors at the shows, it inspires me to search again. Any comments on where to look and also about the pruning methods?

I've just purchased a Royal Highness at my local Home Depot. Perhaps you could try there if you haven't already located it. Good luck.

Since one of the parents of 'Royal Highness' is 'Peace', I can believe that it is a rose that does not repsond well to hard pruning.
Kim Rupert taught me that most of the offspring of 'Peace' truly store their nutrients in their canes, due to the tea rose influence in it's genealogy, and when you remove wood from these roses, they respond poorly.

Thank you for your comments. They surely make a lot of sense. I'll need to pay more attention to the geanology. EM

June '07 ROYAL HIGHNESS is currently at HomeDePOT stores in Silicno Valley, CA. It's price is $6.47. It has dark purple leaves with long elegant stems, that produce a light pink fragrant rose!

I found mine at Wal-Mart on the clearance aisle. It had one bud left, which was unspectacular when it opened-but then it started reblooming while still in the pot-and the blooms were spectacular! She's in the process of reblooming again-and I just got her planted into the garden-so I have great expectations of another good flush from her. No real problems thus far-some powdery mildew, but most of my roses have had a touch of it off and on this summer-easily resolved by stepping up the spraying. No real pest damage, unlike those roses with lighter colored leaves. Definitely a keeper-just wish the blooms were not so easy to "brown" when wet.--A 2007 update--This rose was BS/mildew prone in my garden and was regretfully removed during this year's culling of the roses. She definitely produced some lovely blooms during her time in my garden!

I got mine this past spring at the Walmart Garden Centre. The deer pruned it pretty heavy, just as it was starting to bloom, it came back and grew to almost 5 feet. I had to tie it down as the blooms were threatening to topple it. Appreciate the comments on pruning as I was going to take it back by 2/3 but maybe this year I will go a little easier on the pruning. Still, it seems pretty vigorous (zone 8).
