'Scentimental ™' rose Reviews & Comments

Going into year 3 with an own-root Scentimental in my Zone 5b garden. So far it has died back to the ground both winters and has never gotten more than six inches tall. The two or three blooms it has produced each year are spectacular, but I'm not sure I'm going to stay interested much longer if it doesn't thrive. I have higher hopes for the Whizzbang I just planted, which was bred for this area and is at least as beautiful if not more so.

I still have the original 'Scentimental', that I bought in 1997, planted in the exact place I put it at my family's home. I have yet to ever see a blemished leaf with any disease on it in 18 years. Wow, 18 years. I swear this rose was just new.
For the record, I do not spray. Eons ago, I used to use neem oil. But I no longer spray any more. I would not say this rose is black spot free, but it has been for me in that garden. And it still pumps out white roses, with cherry stripes and stipples.
I believe this rose was different than most striped roses. It succeeded in the clarity of its stripes. You can see them across the entire lot, and they look striped from afar.
I guess if I had to list the cons, the list would be short. Well, its not really THAT fragrant, but I do not care. And its not very bushy for a floribunda. It has wide spaced stems and foliage. But, again, I don't really care about that. If I did, it would have been a 3 year rose and not an 18 year rose. And, if I recall, this one came from the original Edmund's, which I would drive to and pick up new roses at every winter. So I was not disappointed.

I was thinking of picking up this rose as one of the late 50% off roses you can find around this time of year. I know this year has been super ruff on all our roses so I was wondering is yours had any Black Spots at all this year? My thinking is if it got through this year then its up the with Knockout and it should be a easy to care for rose. Thanks for the info in advance, Steve...

It did well. Some BS at the bottom. Nothing to complain about. 3 flushes of blooms and a few new basals. Scent was strong this year. In some years, it doesn't smell. This year, it did.

I struck a cutting from Scentimental about 5 years ago. The new plant sulked for a few years, but flowered well this spring. I was surprised to see a plantlet beside it - the leaves are lighter than on the parent bush (left of the photo), but I think it is a sucker rather than a seedling. I'll know next winter when I dig it up.

I agree that the flowers have a lovely color but are disappointingly short lasting/blow quickly. I grew this rose in a sunny spot in Maryland and I was NOT impressed with the scent. I would rate it only slight-moderate to moderate at best, it must be that it's different depending on where you grow it?! On the positive side, I found it a fairly healthy & vigorous plant, I didn't have a blackspot problem as was mentioned by some.

Update - I've also seen Scentimental at Regan's nursery in CA and it still doesn't have hardly any scent. If you like striped roses, I was much more impressed by the scent of Julio Iglesias. Usually, my roses look/smell much better planted than at the nursery, so if it has that much scent there, then I'm impressed.
