The freshly opened blooms, large and semi-double with muddled centres, have petals of dark crimson-purple with pale lilac-pink reverses; they fade the next day to a uniform lavender grey... culture notes and recommends an example at Kiftsgate Court...

('William Lobb', 'Old Velvet Moss')... with very deep purple-crimson flowers that fade to lavender as they age. It's a superbly dressed rose because the effect is exactly that of a soft, luxurious garment made of old velvet, unfurling to give just a hint of the slightly lighter reverse of the petals when all is revealed.
