Sutter's Gold is a little deeper in colour but could be grouped with these two older roses [Golden Emblem and Lady Margaret Stewart] . So far it has not been very vigorous in my garden at Bentleigh. It is doing better in the newer and heavier soil at Balwyn.

p15.  Harry H. Hazlewood.  The New Roses of 1952.  Sutters Gold (Swim, 1950). Long pointed yellow buds shaded orange and red. Somewhat after the style of the old ‘Duchess of Wellington’. The semi-double blooms are richly Tea fragrant and are born above healthy glossy foliage. A very fine variety. Named after the discoverer of gold in California 100 years ago.

Sutter's Gold (H.T.). Here we have a really lovely yellow rose with a truly exquisite fragrance, such as that found in the Tea Rose most popular in bygone days. This factor alone would make this beautiful long pointed yellow-orange bud, its outer petals richly shaded with Indian red, appeal to most.   The Indian red and golden-orange turn to a deep tinged pink and a golden-yellow as the flower develops, sometimes leaving a coppery suffusion in the outer petals. Borne on long, straight, practically thornless stems, ideal for cutting and decorative purposes, the 24-29 petaled blooms are high-centred and reflex naturally. An abundance of large dark green leathery leaves makes the strong, vigorous and free-branching plant a handsome one. Resistance to foliage trouble to date is a further valuable characteristic of Sutter's Gold.

p144.  Dr. A. S. Thomas.  A Victorian View of the New Roses.
Sutter's Gold: A lovely deep yellow with red streaks up the outer petals. A first class, well pointed decorative rose but the inner petals remain locked together for too short a time for it to be a reliable show rose.
