Breeder's notes:
I had high hopes for this seedling at first, it was an attractive plant with an intoxicating fragrance (practically identical to that of 'Sterling Silver'). But then a few months after it started flowering it found it's strain of black spot, and while it holds it's leaves the look of the plant is spoiled.

I hold on to this seedling partly out of sentimentality as it is one of my first, and because I love it's fragrance. I hope eventually to be able to back cross this plant to R. rugosa 'Alba' to recover black spot resistance while maintaining the fragrance, however it has proven extremely infertile in both directions.

The name 'Valmai' means "May Flower" in Welsh. I should say that I only named it because I was sending cuttings to Texas as part of a trade and felt it needed an identity. I'm afraid I don't know how well it faired in Texas, or if it still grows there.
