This rose is prone to blackspots in hot & dry. Also blackspotted when it was in a FAST-DRAINING pot with MG-potting soil. Neil has glossy but thin foliage. Moved this 2nd-year OWN-ROOT Neil and saw thin & hairy & wimpy root like a petunia. This type of "alfalfa sprouts" root cannot handle dry clay. Such wimpy root needs to be spoon-fed with SOLUBLE fertilizer 24/7, constant wetness and loamy soil. Neil Diamond is probably best grafted on Dr. Huey for thicker root that can digest alkaline minerals.

After growing this a year, it's a blackspot magnet. You MUST spray it within an inch of its life or it completely defoliates here in Houston. Gorgeous flowers though, and they smell great.

Rock & Roll (grafted-on-Dr.Huey) is 100% healthy for my neighbor (alkaline clay) for years. Neil Diamond (Della Reese x Rock & Roll) broke out in blackspot in a fast-draining pot !! Once I put OWN-ROOT Neil Diamond into my alkaline clay (pH 7.7), blackspot is reduced, but IT'S STILL BS-PRONE as 2nd-year own-root. Glossy foliage prefers a higher pH level. I also put red-lava-rock (pH 8.2) to supply iron & potassium, and UP the pH level.
