This rose was sold as Alister Clark's Black Boy. A rosarian friend, collector of Alister Clark roses, cast doubt upon its being that, based not on blooms that were yet to come, but on foliage and habit. Then, when the rose was in flower, the rosarian said it had 'Too many petals' [to be Black Boy].
Other possibilities mentioned by various authoritative voices included Countess Of Stradbroke, Chrysler Imperial Cl.,Oklahoma and Crimson Glory. Now wondering if it might possibly be dark enough to be Papa Meilland. I hoped it was Countess of Stradbroke, another A Clark, but based on the descriptions here, among them petal counts, will venture to ID the rose as Climbing Chrysler Imperial [which wins my gong for second least prepossessing rose name of all time, the ultimate prize going to Parkdirektor Riggers]. I'll post it here until some better informed person can assist with an ID.
