Constance Spry Description and cultivation... The first English Rose... deeply cupped, warm pink flowers... This cultivar doesn't seem to bloom quite as well in our warmer climates as it does in the colder parts of the country... Constance Spry (1886-1960) was an English gardener, flower arranger, and author of Flower Decoration and Favourite Flowers...

Bow Bells Description and cultivation... luminous, strong, and lush pink with prominent gold stamens... Christopher Wren, the renowned seventeenth-century English architect, built fifty-two of London's most beautiful churches, one of which was St. Mary-le-Bow in the Cheapside district. It used to be said that anyone claiming to be a true Cockney had to have been born within hearing distance of the "Bow bells..."

Brother Cadfael Description and cultivation... Blooms start out a lovely soft pink color and are ruffled on the edges with the outer petals reflexing downward... This cultivar is named for the medieval monk-detective in Ellis Peter's mystery novels. Her Brother Cadfael is an herbalist and sleuth who uses his rather un-brotherly worldly talents to solve the occasional murder in the monastery...

Page 78: Cardinal Hume Description and cultivation... its growth habit is much wider than it is tall... The color, very reminiscent of dark purple Gallicas, is not found in too many Modern Roses... deep red-purple, and mildly fragrant. The petals have a distinctive pointed tip and are folded on the outer edge... This cultivar is named for G. Basil Hume, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, who became a cardinal in 1976...
