Joyce Demits at Tanglewood Farms says Village Maid, the Gallica, has very double, two-inch flowers of pale pink, streaked dark rose... Several references refer to apparently different roses. Verrier describes some confusion with a number of other roses, including 'Village Maid' [ Rosa Gallica, p. 107] Brent Dickerson reports that Thomas River's 1837 catalog lists a Gallica 'Village Maid' as already in England, a variety which thus pre-dates both Vibert's 'Village Maid' of 1845 and Vibert's 'Belle Villageoise' of 1839.
