'Whisky Mac' [contains] 53 mg% [carotenoids] ([thereof] 35% epoxydes)...

The picture which we have received from the analysis of the foetida-group and of 'Soleil d'Or', repeats itself in its main lines with modern yellow floribundas. None however attains the saturated yellow colour of the foetida! When anthocyanides join, the content of carotenoids is regularly reduced, so as to be seen with 'Whisky Mac' and 'Sutter's Gold'. Beside much Cyanine and some Chrysanthemine, which give the red colour, we found only 20 mg% of carotenoids (of which 57% epoxydes).

Whisky Mac Description... susceptible to mildew and frost damage...

'Whisky Mac' The Scottish rose nurserymen, Andersons of Aberdeen, likened this rose’s colour to that of well-matured Scotch whisky, ‘deep harvest gold, bronzed in the bud, opening to a lovely rose worthy of bearing the name of Scotland’s well loved and greatest export’. This rose is certainly worth growing. Vigorous and healthy and about 90 cm (3 ft) tall, it has glossy, deep green foliage which is pleasingly bronze tinted when young. The full-petalled, shapely blooms emerge from elegant buds and are freely produced from summer to late autumn. It was raised by the German rose breeder, M. Tantau, in 1967 and is generally considered to be the most strongly scented cultivar in its colour group. Fertile soil that does not dry out is ideal. A sunny site is best but some shade is acceptable. Pruning: Cut back all strong stems of the previous season’s growth to four buds and cut out thin stems completely. Budded plants are best but cuttings root satisfactorily.

Jack Harkness: .....is that ugly word "saleability". The results of these different policies may be illustrated by the rose 'Whisky Mac'. It looked bad at St. Albans, and the judges, quite rightly on its showing, gave it nothing. It looked good in the nurseries, and at the shows, and the rose trade turned it into a best seller.
