I have 3 Brigadoon bushes here near Oklahoma City and 2 of them (the 3rd is a new addition) are wonderful producers of beautiful, large, colorful roses. Brigadoon is not my favorite rose because I like one color roses but it does so wonderful that I have to admire it. I have had problems with black spot however even when I spray.

I am the opposite - I'm a sucker for multi-color roses and Bridadoon is by far one of my favorites. To keep it healty I apply Bayer 3-in-1 every 4 weeks and give it organic RoseTone. It tends to like a bit more shade than the average rose...and finding that right place for it is worth all the effort.

Better still, look at plants in a nursery in your district before you buy, and choose varieties that aren't spotty.

I usually wait a few years before rating a rose. I had looked for Brigadoon for years before finding one at a local nursery in April of 2005. We don't mail order roses. I didn't expect too much from it since I had heard more than a few negative comments/experiences from folks in colder zones. Brigadoon has been fantastic its second season in our yard. It was pretty good the first year. I mounded it last winter and canes were dead to the mounding line last spring. Spring growth was incredible, lots of growth from existing canes and a half dozen new canes. Brigadoon gave us 40 - 50 blooms per flush in 2006. Deb and I love the color changes the blooms go through. Blooms have good vase life (about a week) and Deb likes cutting them for bouquets. Fragrance is better than I expected. I say moderate and Deb says almost strong.

Brigadoon got 6 feet tall (that is tall here) x 5 feet wide. I hope it doesn't get much larger. It will start crowding its neighbors (Peace, First Prize & Sonia). Turnaround time was average, about 6 weeks. Blackspot is not a problem here. Haven't seen any powdery mildew on Brigadoon so far.

My favorite 10 roses is almost etched in stone. It usually takes years and years of excellent performance by a rose to boot one of the old 10 out and replace it. Double Delight is the only rose before Brigadoon to manage to make the top 10 in less than 5 years. Excellent rose (so far)!

Hi Karlla

Lucille Ball
Oklahoma
Chrysler Imperial
Double Delight
Fragrant Cloud
Sterling Silver
Granada
Rio Samba
Kordes' Perfecta
Brigadoon

I cheat on my top 10 list. Crimson Glory is my alltime favorite and I don't include it. Gives me room for an extra rose. These are not our 10 best performing roses. Some of our roses perform better but just haven't caught my fancy. I like fragrance and they are some of our best stinkers. The unexpected fragrance of Brigadoon is what got it on the list. Some of these are tender in our area. None are cane hardy. There are those that say they can not be grown here. Deb's favorite 10 list is full of tender rascals. Rio Samba is at the top of her list.

Dave

I am trying to post comments about all our roses. If you have a question about any on our plants grown list, ask and I'll try to help.

I have approx. 200 roses & couldn't even begin to list my top 10. What part of Montana do you live in?? We will be moving back to the Missoula area & I'm hoping some of my roses will survive there. I have quite a few David Austins that I absolutely love.

We live in Billings. Missoula is about a zone warmer (5/6). We don't have any DAs but they should do alright in Missoula. I have a tough time deciding on the top 10 (technically 11). Mirandy will probably have a spectacular year in 2007 to force her way back into the 10. Dozens are knocking on the door. Figuring out a top 20 would be impossible. Way too many would qualify for that list. I thought 20 would be easier once. Not a chance.

Dave

Edit: Deb and I spend a LOT of time caring for our 165 roses. My hat is off to any that have 200 or more.

Well we own a RV Park right in the river & get fog til about noon every day , which caused a lot of blackspot and mildew this summer. Totally hit we by surprise as i've had a little black spot and only 1-2 roses with mildew in the past. I just took a walk thru the park to see how every one did & I think all the roses survived. I get a bit overwhelmed when spring time rolls around & I need to do some spring cleaning and weeding. I al going to try and do some clean up tomorrow, otherwise I won't be ready when planting time comes. Do you have hot Cocoa, Lilian Austin, iceberg, Knock Out or any of the Jackson & perkins roses??

We have 3 Icebergs but none of the rest you named. If you click on 'Dave and Deb Boyd', a new browser opens with our garden page here at HMF. Click on the 'Plants Grown' tab and you can see the list of the ones we grow. We have quite a few J&P roses.
All I will be doing for a couple more months is pile snow on the bushes. RV parks have been my second home. I park my trailer at them when working out of town jobs (heavy equipment operator). They usually don't have roses. I think the only one that did was around the office in Great Falls.

If you ever get to Washington, please stop by and take a look. You wouldn't believe the comments we get from travelers about our roses. I was told last summer that we are the only RV Park with roses on the west coast. Not sure if that is true or not, but it was a nice compliment. I will take a look at your roses and compare to see which ones I don't have yet, since I just can't seem to stop buying more. In fact my husband didn't believe roses would bring travelers to the park til last summer, and I proved him wrong.

That sounds great. Have you thought of puttings any pics of your roses here?

Shouldn't mention this... clematis grow like weeds here. They are addicting too.

actually I didn't know you could put your own pictures on this site til you told me. I had actually told my husband I wanted to get come pictures taken and get a site set up. I have once corner of the park planted in all Apricot roses from Heirloom roses & it is absoluty beautiful in May & thru the summer If you walk by it you get a really strong wonderful smell. So yes, I need to find out how to put them on the site & get started. I only have 2 Clematis, whish I love, but with 200 roses, plus I plant hundreds of perennials and bulbs,... I don't have the love for Clematis like I do my Roses.

Once upon a time... I called clematis hybridized bindweed and didn't want them anywhere near the roses. Deb wanted clematis and since my primary goal in life is to make her happy, she got her clematis. Best to stay away from them.

We just registered a garden here at HMF and I have tried to upload at least a few of each one. We also have an album site at Gardenbuddies.com. That is where the website link on our page here takes you. I spend a lot of time going through the gardens of the people here at HMF. I click on the GARDENS button on the left, then on the Alphabetical Lists tab at the top of the page. There is a tab there to add your garden to HMF too. When you get to the 'R's, check Red Rose Ridge. That is one of my favorites. I have been checking the gardens for a few years now and still haven't seen all of them or all the photos in each one.

Brigadoon is my favorite of all roses, and I have grown many. It is a steady bloomer in my hot humid Alabama summers. I wish more companies would offer it locally, but I can still find it at a few online sites. In Alabama, roses usually only last a few years. I have several Brigadoon that are over 15 years old. No other rose has held up that long is our climate that causes roses to die after a few short years due to disease. I often become slack with spraying in hot July and August weather, but Brigadoon still survives. The blooms are near perfect and the color is wonderful. Everyone who grows roses needs to try this one.

Thank you for letting us know how Brigadoon does in Alabama. I didn't grow it in Montgomery in the mid 60s. I was hung up on reds then. It would be great if there were comments from all over about Brigadoon. Deb and I are in such a unique area that I sometimes wonder if our comments are worth posting.
Another friend of ours near Montgomery loves Brigadoon.
