Bred by Jardin fleuriste du Roi (France, before 1824).
Class:
Gallica / Provins.  
Bloom:
Violet-red.  Strong fragrance.  Large, full (26-40 petals), button-eye, cupped, globular, quartered bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  Glandular sepals, rounded buds.  
Habit:
Medium, spreading.  

Height: 4' to 5¼' (120 to 160cm).  Width: up to 4' (up to 120cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 4b through 8b.  Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant.  Prune after flowering is finished.

In September 1998, the Montreal Botanical Garden (Le Jardin Botanique de Montreal) carried out a survey of its roses' resistance to black spot, powdery mildew and rust. This is one of the outstanding varieties which showed a 0% to 5% infection rate. The data was taken on well-established roses.
