I have a 'Lyda Rose' hedge in front of my house that I keep cut to about 5 feet tall. It is in bloom from spring through summer and its flowers are abundant and nicely fragrant here in my eastern North Carolina garden.

It will get blackspot but grows through it. It is fertile as a seed parent.

I have a question about Lyda Rose and pruning. I live in zone 7b and have 12 Lyda's, all about two years old. Information here describes her as a graceful, arching shrub of 4-5 feet which can be trained as a climber. Of course, the problem I have is that she is a monster in my climate, but other information sites indicate that she needs little to no pruning. Since her main canes tend to be quite thick and upright, only the laterals are actually arching. All over the place. I have no structures in place for her to climb, and little hope of ever having them. Also, for me, though the flowers are quite lovely, they have little to no scent.

Fortunately I have quite a bit of room, but I'd really like to keep her at a 5-6 foot range. Any suggestions for pruning and shaping would be appreciated.

Lyda rose as onw-root died on its 1st winter in my zone 5a. I checked rose forum, and others (in zone 5b) also reported its dying to the crown, NOT vigorous for zone 5.
