Anyone else finds that at times the fragrance is rather displeasing? Could it have some foetida way back in its lineage? I'm not really sure if it is something environmental or if it is at some point in the bloom's life where the more pleasantly scented oils evaporate. I have a new flush on a young plant, most of it opened inside and smelling like that from the beginning. Before this I had another plant and it would happen now and then, but I didn't really notice any patterns in climate or else... I don't know how to describe it well, but it is somewhat like vinegar, not at all like the usual clover or cinnamon-ish scent.

I love this rose! I got it last August and despite the rainy year and clay soil it refused to stop blooming until a little after the first frost. It lost some leaves from overwatering (because of the rain) but it always put out new ones to make up for it. The blooms were beautiful and unscathed. I can't wait to see what it does this year!

Kim Rupert informed me that Midnight Blue is low-thorn. It makes good seed-parent.

Looks like the same cross as Ebb Tide. Either Carruth really liked this cross and made it several times, or this plant came from the same year as Ebb Tide (2001) but was introduced three years later (2004). Then there is Route 66, which is almost the same cross, except the the seed parent uses Purple Splendour instead of Stephen's Big Purple. These seem to be popular roses on HMF and it seems to have been a good line of breeding for Carruth and Weeks. Bet there's more to come!

Hi Jeff! What else has come that you could recommed to tale a look at? I really like Midnight Blue, except for the fact that they do not last and do not self-clean. Otherwise, both healthy and beautiful colour. Would be interesting to learn what other really dark new inventions there are as of late.
