Page 38: Parentage unknown. ('Pope Pius IX') Taller than the Gallica norm, arching branches. Flowers: small, pink with washes and tones of mauve and violet, fragrant. Thought to be related to Rosa cinnamomea. Agathe was the heroine of Weber's immensely popular opera of 1821, Der Freischütz, and several roses were named after her around that time.
Page 163: [Photo] 'Empress Josephine' (Rosa francofurtana, R. turbinata, 'Frankfurt Rose'). Gallica. The flowers are large for an Old Garden Rose... light and deep pink, with shadings and veinings of mauve and violet... not much fragrance... short and compact... parents might have been R. gallica and R. cinnamomea.

The Agatha rose is, or was, large-flowered, known in Provence about 1435. Varieties: 'Admirable Agatha', 'Beautiful Iris Agatha', 'Beloved Agatha', 'Agatha of the King', 'Agatha Triumph of Venus', 'Agatha Great Sultana', 'Agatha Supreme', and 'Voluptuous Agatha'. Few remain of that prolific family, but Edward Bunyard mentioned the 'Agathes' as smaller editions of the cabbage rose.

Page 20: The story goes that it was brought to England by emigres, but there is no record in the old French books of a variety of this 'Frankfurt Rose' being named after the Empress.

Flowers slightly smaller and of a deeper pink shade than those of the 'Empress' and with a stronger scent. Densely arching growth. Few thorns. 5' x 4'
