I have a yellow Lady Banks Rose. How do I can for it. It has new growth coming out everywhere. Is it a climber? It only bloomed a few months ago. Is once normal for this plant? I got it last year at a local store. Thanks Meg

Yes, it is once-flowering and grows rankly. Take a look at the pictures!

My Lady Banks is a cutting from the World's Largest Rose bush in Tombstone AZ. I live near Medford OR, where we are considered a zone 8. I bought it in 2002 as a two foot tall cutting. 3 years later, it has spread to cover a 12 foot radius and it has never dropped a leaf, even after the snows in winter. I did keep it covered the first year. It is very vigorous, and seems incredibly hardy, with no thorns. I am moving it to the chain link fence on the West side of my house, where it can shade my mother's trailer.

I'd love to have a cutting from The Rose Tree Inn's Lady Banks in Tombstone. Can I ask you how you managed to get one? Will they allow you to take cutting at the site?

Thanks so much!

Does this rose produce hips in the winter and will it take shade with reflected light in southern california.

It may produce some hips for you if you don't prune it. I know the sun in southern California is pretty strong, but as far as growing it in the shade goes, I'm not so sure. Try checking out some of the GARDENS (they're listed on the rose's page) that grow this rose in your area to get a better idea.

We live in Zone 7B in South Carolina and have just purchased two ladies bank roses (yellow), most of the sites say Zone 8-10 but one site said 7b. Should we prune this back in the winter so it will regrow in the spring? Thanks.

Yellow Lady Banks gets huge here in north Texas (the size of a Volkswagen, no kidding!). Put them where there's lots of space. I'd only cut back any growth that winter-killed. This rose is not ever-blooming. So the more you cut off in the fall, the less glorious blooms in the spring. It's a bit dry and shady where my plant is; it's a year old and over 12' high and 10 feet across. I'm in 7B also, and I plan to add a large back of mulch at the base when really cold weather comes, and I'll water before the first few hard freezes so it doesn't dry out. I love this rose! Barbara.
