'Vanguard' rose Reviews & Comments

Botanica's Roses claims Vanguard "blooms through summer and autumn" and lists it as a repeat bloomer. Those of you who grow this rose, can you clarify? Thanks

Even at 6 years of age, mine rarely blooms again after the Spring flush. Climate may play a role, but I don't think anyone has ever seen more than a few scattered blooms later in the season. Beware, this is a huge shrub and it has health problems (severe Rust), not to mention that the blooms fade quickly to a very unattractive muddy hue that is neither pink nor orange but something like a dirty dishrag. It leaves a great deal to be desired, in my opinion.

Thanks Paul. Botanica's picture makes it appear very appealing. I won't be buying it now.
Also, I am tryng to purchase your Treasure Trail moss rose. I am very interested in buying some repeat blooming mosses, and this is one I'd like to acquire. Any ideas? I've put myself on Rogue Valley's waiting list, but wondered if you knew of any other sources? Any good varieties to buy that are remontant? I am trying to buy Deuil de Paul Fontaine again (I had it as a kid in a different state) but haven't found a good, own-root source.
Thanks
Erin

Is this rose really once-blooming only or does it repeat? Thank you.

If you mean Vanguard the Rugosa, it blooms mainly once but after the first flush, it does give you a very few flowers. This is not a generous rose when it comes to blooming, even with the first flush. It is also very prone to rust if it is a problem in your area. I have tried twice with with this rose and both times I finally got rid of it. The flowers are very beautiful but they soon fade to a poor colour, plus the rust problem. Sorry to be so negative.

Thanks for the information. Since it is so large, I think there are better options for the space it would take up. Barbara
