En .1815, les roses remontantes étaient encore rares, lorsque, au mois d'août de cette même année, la Rose du Roi fui obtenue d'un semis fait en 1814 par M. Souchet, jardinier chef au fleuriste de Sèvres, près Saint-Cloud. Frappé de voir une plante si constamment florifère, M. Souchet la montra au comte Lelieur, directeur des jardins de la couronne, et le pied-mère, bien soigné, donna une belle floraison en 1816.

In an article "The Progress And Development Of The Rose During Those One Hundred Years Of Peace" by H. R. Darlington:
In that year [1815] came before the world, or rather before the Director of the French Gardens, Comte Lelieur, a Rose which was the foundation of our modern hybrid perpetual Rose. The seed much have been sown some year or two previously by Souchet, a French gardener, and in August, 1815, he showed this Rose to Comte Lelieur. For several years afterwards it was known under the name of Comte Lelieur, but Louis XVIII took a great delight in the Rose, and in consequence, when it was brought out in 1819 it became known, in compliment to him, by the name of Rose du Roi.

Décrite par Dumont de Courset, cette variété était au château de Soucelle en 1810, et dans les pépinières de Le Lieur en 1812. On l'appelait aussi Portlandica maxima, Perpétuelle Le Lieur ou Rose Le Lieur.
