I have found these slug/catapillers on my roses I dont have a picture of them but they are yellow and orange with spiny things all over their backs. They move like a slug but look like a catapiller.  They were eating my rose leaves down to the stem. I can't find them anywhere on the internet and I have never seen anything like them. If anyone knows what they may be let me know. I live in Missouri. Thank You!

!I've got a beetle, which measures aboutthe size of the nail of my thumb, he's black with irregular white spots on the back  and the little b... attacks all of the lightcoloroured  blooms. Almost all of my roses were discoloured and shrunk to  brown crumbled things that had nothing to do with the beautyfull blooms I usually have in my garden. They attacked New Dawn, celestial, Buff Beauty,Fantin Latour, Heritage,Mme Alfred Carriere, Mme Ernest  Calvat, Iceberg,Blairii No2,Cornelia, Felicia, Penelope, Bobby James, Pauls' Hymalayan Musk,Colette,Fritz Nobis, Ghislaine de Feligonde, Clair Matin Denise Grey, Laure Davoust etAdelaide de Orleans. Who can tell me who'se this horrible little pest and how to get rid of it? Ah, besides, when you gather them they stink!   Eve

Hi there.

I have a miniture rose that I received at Christmas time.  Things have been going very well till just recently.  Somehow, we have aquired small black flies and I think they leave eggs or something on the leaves.  These are so small you almost don't see them.

My leaves are starting to turn yellow.   I have rinsed off the plant once about a week ago. And they are back.  I have kept the plant indoors. It have given me several blooms.

Any advise would be appreciated.  If there is another post that referrances the same problem, please be specific on which one it is ... I have tried your search funtion and all the buzz words I have used... I didn't find anything.

I looked up a picture of aphids.. and this doesn't look like them. These look like peper but much smaller.

This is my second miniture rose... The first one died.  I'd like to keep this one.  :)

Thanks

My best guess without seeing your rose is 'soil gnats'.  There are soil drenchs you can purchase to get rid of them. I would suggest you do a web search for  soil/gnats  and see what comes up.

Until you can find a solution, back off watering a bit. The gnats can't stand dry soil, and it might help you fend them off.

Best of Luck

Last year my roses were attacked by something I thought were catterpillars.  I believe I may have been wrong.  They are little tiny green worms which come from eggs laid inside the rose stems.  At the start I see a set of black dots.  These dots soon spread and burst the stem of the rose.  My Celestial bush was attacked so badly that I had to cut it way back last fall and as a result, have very few blooms this year.  Do I have the dreaded sawfly bug?  If so, what do the adults look like and how best can I control this problem?
