I am doing a paper at cameron university on the anatomy of a rose, i have a lot of information, but i can't find any information on thorns. Is there any specific purpous to thorns and if so, what is it, why are thorns on roses, i know there has to be some purpous, please someone help me answer this questiom

In northern Michigan the thorniest varieties are planted below windows of hunting/fishing/resort cabins and are very effective in deterring bears, humans etc. I forgot where I read of this, and now have an inquiry for using roses as a deterrant. If you learn of any very thorny varieties, I would like names. TY
