The references make this round sound like it was the 'New Zealand' of yesteryear.

They do, don't they. I am sure you are talking about the 1988 hybrid tea 'New Zealand'. But Sam McGredy named another rose, a 1963 floribunda, 'New Zealand'. He was just back from his first trip to New Zealand, a two week trip about which he wrote "We had a lot of fun". This earlier rose apparently wasn't very good and I suspect he never introduced it, holding off honouring that beautiful country until an equally beautiful rose came along, the hybrid tea 'New Zealand' in 1988.
