In Madrid, by far the most beautiful rose of the year 1960, under the biggest international competition of an international committee of important rose connoisseurs awarded the highest award. The giant flowers have a diameter of over 15 cm and in full bloom even more amazingly beautiful. A light, pleasant scent is her own. The color is something unique in its composition. A bright red, which is basically yellowish white. By the vast scope and striking color works the flower like a phenomenon. The growth of this rose is lush, strong and reminds of her father's 'Gloria Dei', from which she inherited some excellent qualities. The strong stems carry the flowers taut and a dense, dark green, leathery foliage covers the plant. The plant brings an unimaginable abundance of their giant flowers and inspires every rose lover.

Patricia, this is exactly what I got in September 2018 in an e-mail from Fabian Gülk from Kordes-Rosen regarding the description of 'Isabel de Ortíz' from a Kordes catalogue (1962). I am sure he used a translator from German to English, cause it has no sense for me as well.

This is a summary of the message I received from KORDES ROSEN, regarding HT ‘Isabel de Ortíz’ (Reimer Kordes, Germany, 1962).
“Isabel de Ortiz is the beautiful family member of the head gardener Ramón Ortiz Ferré, who takes care of the urban facilities such as the Parque del Oeste in Madrid with effort and much enthusiasm.
That is why it was the desire of the leading circles in the International Competition for New Roses of the City of Madrid (CONCURSO INTERNACIONAL ROSAS NUEVAS VILLA DE MADRID) that she should be godmother for this new breed.”

Does anybody has any information regarding who Mrs. ‘Isabel de Ortíz’ was? Thanks in advance for any information regarding the origin or provenience of this unique name for such a unique rose.

No certain information. A Mrs Isabel de Ortiz Martin was member of the Costa Rican Delegation to the United Nations in 1961. Was she a rose aficionado?
