The variety 'Stand by Me' originated from a cross between two unnamed varieties, female parent Clematis fremontii and the male parent Clematis integrifolia, through recurrent selection breeding. Seed from individual female parent plants was collected from the breeders' garden in Waseca, Minnesota, USA in early 2008. Seed was sown by Hans Hansen in Zeeland, Michigan, USA in late 2009

The new plant was hybridized by the inventor at a personal garden in Waseca, Minn., USA from a cross made in June of 2008. The seed was from a selected, unnamed form sold by a perennial nursery in Clarkson, Nebr. of Clematis fremontii (not patented) as the female parent, times an unnamed, unreleased, blue-flowered selection of Clematis integrifolia (not patented), as the male parent.
