The ramblings of one of HelpMeFind's founders. This month learn about the how and why HMF came to be. One of our most popular authors, Jim Delahanty, is back this month with an article you are sure to want to read before rushing to the nursery for commercial solutions to some common disease and pest problems. Besides that, Jim's articles are just plain fun to read. John Birsner recounts his memorable "ride" with a group of avid and noted rose rustlers. An entertaining and enlightening look at rose rustling. This is John's first contribution to HelpMeFind, and we hope to see more soon. Paul writes extensively about a beautiful new rose he has bred and named for the widely known and respected California rosarian Jeri Jennings. We should all be so lucky to have a Paul Barden rose named after us!
We are doubly pleased to reprint this article as Jeri is one of the HelpMeFind administrators who volunteers her time to make HMF the best it can be. In addition to her numerous article contributions to the site, she, in concert with all our admins, applies her insight and expertise to help monitor the collection and organization of information from around the world. Robert is back with a follow up to his last article Banksia Hybrids, A New Beginning. Hybridizers will obviously be eager to learn more about Robert's work, but even those of you having little to do with breeding roses will find this very interesting as Robert discusses critical decisions and the reasons behind them. It will certainly make you appreciate your favorite modern roses more. Calling all organic gardners... The ever-pragmatic John Starnes Jr. is back with this article about... well, you'll just have to read it, won't you. John can make ANY subject interesting and entertaining. Unfortunately, Cliff's article this month is a result of direct experience. Southern Californians will surely relate. Cliff walks us through "varmint" proofing his garden. He's not one to take this stuff lying down. This is about as thorough an "introduction" as you are going to find. If you are not growing any climbers yet, you will likely want to after reading Patsy's article.
Patsy Cunningham is currently the webmaster for Rhode Island Rose Society and served as the president from 2001 through 2004. She has written numerous wonderful articles, several of which have been awarded the ARS Award of Merit. Jeri notes the recent ARS award presentation to Mel Hulse of the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden. Mel certainly needs no introduction in the rose community; he is respected and admired far and near.
In addition, we are truly fortunate and grateful to have his long standing support here at HelpMeFind. Before becoming an administrator, Mel was one of our very first "official" guests - we have well over 100,000 registered guests and Mel is number 3.
His rose expertise in tandem with his knowledge of and experience with computer systems has been instrumental in HMF's progress. He has the insight to know what to do; the experience to know how to do it; and the dedication to roll up his sleeves and start doing it. His only failing seems to be his inability to make enemies: I've never heard an unkind word spoken of him. Lou Little is a new contributor to HelpMeFind and we are thrilled to feature her work. Exhibitors showing either of these roses will want to read this - you may be in for a surprise! Differences of opinions are important in any organization. It forces us to consider other facts and ideas and also critique our own. HelpMeFind is no exception. Case in point, this month's article from Jeri Jennings about recent ARS classification changes. Jeri knows her stuff - see what you think. Kim pays tribute to a southern California rose garden staple. Kim's articles are always popular. If you're familar with his work you know why and if not, you are in for a treat. A magnificent and heart warming tibute to one of his heroes; Sean McCann gave this captivating lecture about Dean Reynolds S. Hole at the Heritage Rose Convention in Australia ten years ago. A must read if you have never had the pleasure or even if it has been a while.
