Breeder's Rights
[From Roses: Species and Varieties; Description and Photographs, by Van Dijk and Kurpershoek, p. 13:] When breeder's rights are granted, it will be for a period of twenty-five years, and the breeder pays an annual fee for them. He can allow his rights to lapse before the end of the twenty-five years. [A breeder licenses a rose-grower/nursery to propagate his roses...] a rose subject to breeder's rights is often registered under a name or "appellation" other than the name it bears in rose catalogues. For instance, the registered appellation of the rose Lavender Dream is 'Interlav'. The appellation will sometimes indivate the breeder, in this case the firm of Interplant.
