VIDA GOLDSTEIN
Born: 13th April 1869 – Portland Victoria
Died: 15th August 1949 – South Yarra Victoria
A leading Suffragist and campaigner for social reform in the early 1900’s, Vida was key in changes that allowed women the vote, the ability to run for parliament and the right to own land.
In 1903, she ran as an independent candidate for the Senate in the federal election as the first woman parliamentary candidate in the British Empire.   Although unsuccessful, she made four subsequent attempts in both the upper and lower houses.  She toured the world as an advocate for social reform, speaking in favour of women’s suffrage to the US Congress and throughout Brittan.  Among her many other achievements Vida was outspoken on equal pay, public control of utilities and women’s rights, as well as having a deep sympathy to the cause of working people.  She pushed for the creation of the Children’s Courts and raising the age of marriage consent.   Vida spent her last years living with her two sisters in South Yarra and passed away unnoticed in South Yarra in 1949.  In 1984 a federal electorate, the Division of Goldstein in Melbourne was named in her honour.
